The Jim Thompson House: Savior of Thai Silk

The Jim Thompson House is the home of James H.W. Thompson, a self-made American entrepreneur, founder of the Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company. Today, the house is a museum for all to visit. Thompson's achievements during his 25 year stay in the Kingdom of Thailand have won him the title "Legendary American of Thailand". For his contribution to the Thai Silk industry, Jim Thompson was awarded the Order of the White Elephant, a decoration bestowed upon foreigners for having rendered exceptional service to Thailand.

With the advent of industrialization, ever-increasing demand for machine-made textiles dealt a devastating blow to traditional silk weaving. Thompson’s deep love for the culture, way-of-life, and art of Thailand persuaded him to save this dying craft. He was confident that the brilliance and distinctive qualities of Thai silk would draw significant interest overseas. He was right. Once Thai Silk made its way to the cover of Vogue Magazine, it became an instant hit. In 1948, The Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company was born.

The house consists of a complex of six traditional Thai-style houses. Teak structures were purchased from several owners from various parts of Thailand, and constructed in its present location. The Thai house sits on one rai of land with Saen Saeb canal to the back. Thompson found life along the klong simple and charming, and therefore bought this piece of land.

Once at the compound, you’ll have to make your way through beautifully landscaped gardens to find the house. Thompson found the haphazard look of nature's lush tropical jungles appealing and therefore turned his garden into a jungle. This jungle landscape in the midst of the city gives the house its unique appeal.  You will find many tropical trees and plants here.

Inside the house you will get to view Thompson’s collection of works, sculptures, paintings, porcelain, and much more. You will begin your journey in the Drawing room. Then from there, you will be guided to the other rooms including the dining room, the Bencharong room, the study, the bedrooms, and the pavilions. The beautifully decorated rooms and architectural beauty of Thai houses is not something to be missed. If you are interested in Jim Thompson’s gallery, Thai houses, or Thai Silk, pay a visit to The Jim Thompson House (museum).
