Thanon Sai Wattanathum: Lampang's Cultural Road

Even though times have changed, some things will remain the same. Lampang is well known for its horse carriages, gleaming temples, and Kad Kong Ta walking street, but to be in touch with the local way-of-life, there isn’t a better place than Thanon Sai Wattanathum (the cultural road).

The cultural road is located on Wang Nua road. The city wall once stood along this road. Now, the area is inhabited by the locals of Lampang. One of the historical sites that you will encounter is Gu Jao Ya Suta which is believed to be the arched doorway to Wat Kak Kaew. The temple itself is of Lanna design with four angels on each corner. Another important temple is Wat Pratu Pong which is also of Lanna style and contains remnants of the city wall.

Aside from the old wooden houses and temples, the street also offers visitors the chance to partake in certain activities. Every Friday evening, the walking street of Kad Mua Kua Lang appears. Here you will find vendors selling locally made products including toys, garments, and food of course. Most of the vendors are locals who live in this old part of town and sell their goods as a hobby. In front of Gu Jao Ya Suta, people gather to give alms to monks, play local music, and perform local dances. On Sundays, onWiang Nua road, you will get to see Kad Mua Kua Gnai. This market differs from the other markets in town because it sells primarily food and desserts. Early in the morning, the locals will come here to shop and give alms to the monks passing by.

Lampang has several markets usually open during the weekend each with their own personality. You’ll be able to visit historical sites along with temples and wooded houses in this residential area. Take a look at the local handmade products for sale and taste some of Lampang’s local foods and desserts.

    • จุดเด่น:
    • Enjoy the sight of temples, Lanna architecture, and historical sites on this quiet and shady road.
    • จุดด้อย:
    • There aren't a lot of vendors at the market or walking street. This results in few people visiting the area aside from the locals who go there on a weekly basis.
