Thai Dessert Museum: Something Sweet in Amphawa

It goes without saying that no meal can be complete without the final touch of dessert. Everyone has a favorite dessert which their sweet tooth can’t get enough of. If you fancy Thai desserts, head over to the Thai Dessert Museum at Amphawa Floating Market to learn more about Thailand’s sweet treats and how they look.

The reason for the museum’s location in Samut Songkhram province is due to the fact that the fertile land in area allows for various plants to be grown. These plants are part of the ingredients and presentation of various Thai desserts. If you didn’t already know, the Thai word for sweets, candy, or dessert is ‘Kanom’.

Once inside the museum, you will be treated to an array of exhibits displaying replicas of actual desserts, and plenty of information about each dessert. In here, you will get to learn about the history of Thai desserts and its evolution over time from the Sukhothai period to the Ayutthaya period and the Rattanakosin period. One of the popular exhibits in the museum is the ‘Lucky 9’ desserts; you may recognize some of these desserts. The nine desserts on display are believed to bring good luck to those who eat it. Also on display are various tools used in making desserts.

The replicas on display at the museum are so life-like that you’ll surely grow an appetite after a while of being in the museum. Furthermore, the decoration and presentation of each dessert is in its original form. After your visit, simply head over to Amphawa Floating Market and search for your favorite Thai dessert.

    • จุดเด่น:
    • The museum has a nice collection of replica desserts coupled with lots of interesting information about them. Touch and take photos of your favorite Thai dessert.
    • จุดด้อย:
    • The museum is fairly new so some things may be lacking still. Hopefully, there will be more desserts on display in the future. The museum will also benefit from having a staff to help provide information.

    How to get there

Take Rama 2 road and drive through the town of Samut Songkhram. Switch to Route 325 (Samut Songkhram – Bang Phae) and continue towards Damnoensaduak district. At the intersection, take a left and drive to King Rama II memorial park. Turn left on Pawongsomboon road and continue straight until you reach the district office. The office is nearby the river.
